Micro Chipping

In the united kingdom, it is a legal requirement for all dogs over the age of eight weeks to be microchipped and registered to an approved database. This law came into effect on 6th april 2016 under the microchipping of dogs (england) regulations 2014 and microchipping of dogs (wales) regulations 2015. Laws similar to these are also in effect in scotland and northern ireland.

The microchip should be fitted by a trained professional, such as a vet. It’s about the size of a grain of rice, and it’s usually inserted into the loose skin on the back of the dog’s neck.

The details stored on the microchip should include the name and address of the dog’s owner, and it’s also recommended to provide a telephone number. It is important to keep this information upto-date in the event that your dog gets lost or stolen.

If a dog is not microchipped or if their details are not updated, owners can face a fine up to £500. It is also important to note that the microchip only serves as a form of identification, and does not replace the requirement for dogs to wear a collar with the owner’s name and address when in a public place, as specified by the control of dogs order 1992.

We will be offering our microchipping services soon, please contact us to discuss your requirements

Ultrasound Scanning

Ultrasound scanning is a commonly used method to confirm pregnancy in dogs, as well as to monitor the health and progress of the pregnancy. It’s a non-invasive procedure and is considered safe for use on expectant dogs.

Ultrasound scanning allows a professional to visually confirm pregnancy from around 25-28 days after mating onwards. The dog’s abdomen is occasionally shaved for this procedure and a gel is applied to help with the transmission of the ultrasound waves.

Professionals may look for several signs of pregnancy, including the gestational sacs where puppies develop, heartbeats within these sacs, and the overall appearance and health of the reproductive organs.

In addition to confirming pregnancy, ultrasound scans can be used throughout the dog’s gestation period to monitor the puppies’ development and to check for any potential problems. However, it’s less reliable for determining the exact number of puppies compared to an x-ray, particularly in the latter stages of pregnancy.

It’s important to note that any form of scanning or medical procedure should be carried out only by a qualified professional, and if you think your dog may be pregnant, you should seek advice from a vet.

Cytology

Cytology refers to the examination of cells under a microscope. In dog breeding, cytological examination is often performed on vaginal smears to determine the best time for mating. This can be particularly significant in professional breeding programs to maximise the chances of successful mating and conception.

During a female dog’s heat cycle (oestrus), there are changes in the types and numbers of cells present in vaginal discharges. This cyclical cellular change reflects hormone fluctuations. By taking a small sample and examining it under a microscope, vets can often ascertain the most fertile period for the female dog.

There are several reasons why cytology is used in dog breeding:

1. Precise Timing: Cytology can help to identify the optimal time for mating or artificial insemination, increasing the probability of successful conception.

2. Health Check: It can also help in identifying infections or other conditions that might affect the dog’s breeding ability.

3. Reduces Unnecessary Repetition: Knowing the right time for breeding can reduce the need for repeated mating attempts, lowering stress for both dogs and breeders.

4. Financial Considerations: In planned breedings, particularly when using services like shipped semen, knowing the precise fertile period can have substantial financial benefits.

Just remember, cytology should be performed by a vet or someone with the appropriate training and knowledge to ensure correct interpretation of the results.

Artificial Insemination (AI)

Artificial insemination is often recommended for breeding French Bulldogs due to a few reasons associated with their unique physical characteristics and general health:

1. Physical Limitations: French Bulldogs often have a unique physique with a large head and narrow hips which can make natural mating difficult and stressful for the dogs.

2. Breathing Problems: French Bulldogs often suffer from brachycephalic syndrome, a condition related to their short noses and flat faces. This can make the exertion of natural mating risky and potentially harmful to their health.

3. Genetic Diversity: Artificial insemination permits the use of semen from dogs located anywhere in the world. This allows breeders to increase genetic diversity and improve the health of future generations.

4. Safety: The procedure is safer for the female bulldog as it reduces the risk of physical injury that could happen from natural mating.

5. Increased Chances of Pregnancy: The use of artificial insemination allows for precise timing of insemination, which may increase the chances of successful conception.

Remember, any breeding, including artificial insemination, should be carried out under the advice and guidance of a professional vet or a trained canine reproduction specialist to ensure the health and safety of the dogs involved.
